<p>The F10 BMW M5 is as close to a halo car as the Bavarians got this year and it’s now wonder, it seems like there’s no situation where it can’t be brilliant.</p>
<p>Appearances can be deceiving so BMW’s M Division have decided to push the 2012 M5 trough another improbable test and, while at it, make a video of the whole thing.</p>

<p>In getting with the holiday spirits, the M Division decided to give an illustrator quite the boring assignment, even suggesting he’d make a cliche drawing.</p>
<p>The result would be a BMW M division Christmas card. That was kind of the plan, but the setup isn’t as predictable as it seems.</p>
<p>Since the new BMW M5 was to be involved somehow, the decision came in that this new Christmas card would be drawn up in the car, while moving at great speed.</p>

<p>Thus, the video we now have features Swiss illustrator Gavin Patterson in the passenger seat of a furiously driven F10 BMW M5.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, at the wheel, we find BMW M division’s Urs Inauen. The most important thing on his resume is that he’s a precision driver for the Germans.</p>
<p>The plan was very ambitious and even though BMW selected some very capable men at their job, the mix of gs and excitement thrown around by the M5 said a lot.</p>
<p>BMW M Division’s Christmas card looks more like abstract art than something you’d put under the Christmas tree. It seems like 560 horsepower and sideways action is not the best way to draw.</p>

The M Sport package offers up some pleasant appearance details, particularly focused on the <a id="KonaLink3" href="#"><span style="color:blue;">front end</span></a> of the 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.</p>

Unfortunately, not everybody agrees with these fans and when Global Concept Automobile decided to take one into the racing.</p>
<p>Whenever a production car is turned into a racer, there’s plenty of components that need to be changed in order to handle the conditions but what GC Automobile did is beyond belief.</p>
<p>Technically called a silhouette race car, this racing version of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe is miles away from the car we all know and love.</p>

Naturally, the wheels, tires, brakes, suspension setup and all of the interior was changed but things go a lot further than that.</p>
<p>I’m not even talking about the wider, lower, aerodynamic body which has robbed away some of the looks of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. </p>
<p>I’m talking about the racing team taking away the very heart of the 1 Series M Coupe, its engine and gearbox. Whereas we all loved the 3.0 liter twin-turbo straight six and the manual gearbox, apparently it won’t cut it on the track.</p>

Instead, GC Automobile opted for a 6.2 liter Chevrolet V8 engine with 550 horsepower and a sequential gearbox. No doubt the performance is of a different level but we just can’t help but disapprove of the decision to build this car.</p>

<p>The magazine numbers are in. In the December issue of Car and Driver, the US magazine reports that the new BMW M5 ran 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds. From 0 to 100 mph, the M5 only needed 8.3 seconds.</p>
<p>But even more impressive, the F10 M5 runs the quarter mile in 12.0 seconds reaching 122mph.</p>
<p>BMW has moved on with the new F10 M5 from naturally aspirated engines to a TwinPower turbocharged V8. The high-revving 4.4-liter (4395cc) turbocharged uses the BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, twin-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct fuel injection, Valvetronic variable valve control and a cross-bank exhaust manifold.</p>

<p>The M5 tested by Car and Driver uses the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.</p>
<p>In comparison, same magazine tested the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG which ran 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and the quarter-mile in 12.0 seconds . The E63 AMG is powered by a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 and it was equipped with the Performance package that increases the power to 550 hp and torque to 590 lb-ft at 2000 rpm.</p>

<p>Today BMW of North America takes the wraps off it’s latest limited edition M3. The concept is similar than the previous two other editions but the Competition Edition, with its Carbon trim and black details, is a bit more motorsport influenced. It’s also a way for BMW to signify the launch of Certified M Centers in the US. Instead of a phone bank opening up to sell the cars, BMW is giving one Competition Edition to the first 40 dealerships that sign on to become M Certified.</p>
<p>Official Release: BMW of North America today announced the 2012 M3 Competition Edition featuring Frozen Silver exterior paint and other enhancements. To honor the 40 years since the founding of BMW M in 1972, production for the United States of these very special M3 Coupes will be limited to 40 identically-equipped cars. Each features BMW Individual Frozen Silver Metallic exterior paint with a deep metallic luster to accentuate the athletic lines of the legendary M3. The unique exterior treatment also includes black hood intakes and dark chrome exterior trim, including the kidney grills, the M side gills and the exhaust tips. Black M3 GTS wheels complete the striking exterior. The interior features black Extended Novillo Leather with unique palladium silver accents and palladium silver-contrast stitching on front seats, headrests, door trim panels / handles, center console, and center armrest. The interior is further distinguished with an Alcantara-covered multi-function M steering wheel with M3 Checkered Flag logo inlay. The door sill finishers also feature the M3 Checkered Flag logo while the handbrake lever sports an embroidered M Power logo. As a final touch, genuineCarbon Fiber trims the dash and center console. The 2012 BMW M3 Competition Edition will be offered for an MSRP of $81,060 including destination and handling.</p>

<p>Unlike previous M3 Edition models, one each of the 40 2012 M3 Competition Edition models has been allocated to the first 40 US authorized BMW centers to become M Certified Centers.</p>
<p>Each 2012 M3 Competition Edition will be powered by the award-winning 4.0-liter, 414-horsepower M V8 engine, equipped with BMW’s M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) which lowers the 0-60mph acceleration time of the M3 to 4.5 seconds from 4.7. Redline is a breathtaking 8,400 rpm.</p>
<p>The 2012 Competition Edition M3 continues the tradition of innovation and passion for driving by incorporating key changes to the M3’s dynamic qualities. The included Competition Package reduces vehicle ride height by 10mm and includes M3 GTS 19-inch wheels (in black for this Edition) with wider offset for enhanced stability, standard Electronic Damping Control with enhanced programming, and higher-threshold programming for the M Dynamic Mode.</p>

<p><strong>Mr Poggel, what were the greatest challenges in developing the V8 engine for the new BMW M5?</strong> <br /><em>Jürgen Poggel</em>: The V8 engine is a high performance sports engine. Our goal in developing this new model was to make it even better that the V10 engine of the predecessor, which had already gained legendary status.<br /> <strong>Where do you see the advantages?</strong><br />One key advantage of this turbo engine is the high torque available from speeds as low as the bottom range. Whereas I have to use the right gear with the matching speed for the V10, the new engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers unbridled thrust over a wide speed range. The new motor provides nearly 700 Nm of torque at a speed as low as 1500 rpm. In the V10, this was about 300 Nm. The characteristics of the high speed turbo unit with its extremely spontaneous response make the V8 in the new BMW M5 the ultimate sports engine.<br /> <img title="Name:  Graph.jpg<br />

The output from this engine, on the other hand, remains constant from 1000 rpm. So rev limits make sense. And we have implemented a large number of technical measures that raise the response to the level of an aspirated engine. </p>
<p><strong>What does the customer get from all this?</strong><br />He gets outstanding performance and drivability on both the race track and public roads.<br />On the race track I have to shift gears less. The sensitive response allows me to balance the vehicle with the accelerator pedal over a wide speed range. This means faster lap times.<br />In everyday situations, the most convincing feature is above all the superior performance potential. The engine builds up a huge thrust, mostly over more than one gear. And we have raised the efficiency of the engine, so that it now needs considerably less fuel – both on paper and in reality. This benefits above all the range – in addition to your purse and the environment, a clear advantage over the predecessor.<br /> <img title="Name:  1.jpg<br />

            Size:  236.3 KB&#8221; border=&#8221;0&#8243; /><br /><em>Generously dimensioned pipes in the intake section.</em><br /> <strong>Let’s start with the intake.</strong> <br />The charge air exiting the compressor measures as much as 130 °C and must be cooled. In this engine, the charge air is not cooled with air, but indirectly with water. So I don’t need to transfer the air through long pipes, and the throttle losses are very much lower. We use coolers and pipe cross sections of exceptionally generous sizes. Intake silencers and charge air coolers are installed very close to the engine. All of these measures contribute to dethrottling on the intake side.</p>

<p><strong>The V8 engine of the new BMW M5 is now also fitted with “VALVETRONIC”. Can you tell us what that means? </strong><br />With the VALVETRONIC, the intake valve lift can be varied continuously from two or three tenths of a millimetre to the max limit. The advantage of this is best seen when compared with the conventional aspirated engine. In this latter case, the power is regulated via the so called throttle valve. The engine always tries to take in the full quantity of air, but I’m just not letting it. The valve is open fully only at full throttle. When I close the throttle gap, the engine generates a partial vacuum throughout the intake system. When the intake valve is closed and the piston starts moving up, this partial vacuum can no longer be used for the engine. </p>

<p>With VALVETRONIC, the quantity of air is regulated at the valve. When the cylinder has enough air for the respective load point, I close the valve. A partial vacuum is therefore generated here as well when the piston moves down. As an analogy, imagine closing the hole in the end of a bicycle pump while you’re pulling on the other end: let go, and the end returns inside the pump. In other words, the energy I expend building up the partial vacuum I can get back afterwards. The throttle losses are therefore reduced.<br />VALVETRONIC also allows the charging pressure to build up considerably faster. We can therefore use a load control that lets me keep the turbine at speed and open the valve clearance as much as I need when shifting gears or accelerating. When I step on the accelerator, I feel the thrust pressing into me faster, and there is far better response.<br /> <img title="Name:  3.jpg<br />

We’re constantly hearing about “cross bank exhaust manifold” and “twin scroll twin turbo technology” without actually understanding the advantages.</strong><br />(Laughs.) The cross bank exhaust manifold is an optimised collector of exhaust gases for the turbocharger from each of the cylinders. The V8 engine runs with a stutter anyway, giving rise to the typical V8 bubbling. A twelve cylinder always ignites the cylinders in the bank in crosswise fashion, one left, one right, nice and regular. For reasons of comfort, the V8 is fitted with a crankshaft that ignites twice in succession on the one bank and then jumps to the other. You can hear this highly irregular ignition sequence as the typical V8 bubbling in the exhaust tract, a sound you cannot hear from the engine of the new BMW M5. <br /> <img title="Name:  4.jpg<br />

The exhaust gases are therefore transferred optimally to the turbochargers. Every cylinder can therefore “expirate” under the optimal conditions. When I open the exhaust valve, a very hot, high energy jet of exhaust gases is released under a high pressure that hits an exhaust gas duct and then the charger turbine with virtually undiminished force. I therefore utilise the energy not only in the exhaust gas flow, but also in its momentum. As an analogy, imagine blowing on a pinwheel with a single breath: you’ll see that not only the volume, but also the momentum of the air has an effect.<br /> <img title="Name:  5.jpg<br />

            Size:  235.7 KB&#8221; border=&#8221;0&#8243; /><br /><em>Cross bank exhaust manifold with M TwinPower Twin Scroll turbochargers.</em><br />This works only because the Twin Scroll turbines separate the exhaust gas flows in the two turbo chargers.<br />To illustrate this advantage, let’s try the following thought experiment. Let us imagine a very simple setup. Eight cylinders blow through a “hole” on an exhaust gas turbine. The pressure pulse therefore not only hits the turbine, but also spreads into other exhaust gas pipes. I therefore lose energy. This method is called constant-pressure turbocharging: I pump everything together into a large vessel from which the collected exhaust gas passes over the turbine. In our two turbos, however, the Twin Scroll ducts act as a partition in the turbine, so that every exhaust pulse hits the turbine blades directly without getting lost on the way. This is how we can utilise the speed of the gas as well. Not only the volume of the exhaust gas jet, also its dynamics takes effect – and its momentum is converted effectively.<br />This transfer of exhaust gases offers yet another advantage: when more than one cylinder blows together in a pipe, there is a lot of residual gas there. Consequently, when the exhaust valve is opened, the cylinder cannot fully discharge its exhaust gas. In our motor, the gas flowing out of the cylinder also takes this residual gas with it.<br /> <img title="Name:  6.jpg<br />

All in all, the measures I have described, together with other steps, lead to a huge reduction in consumption during approval procedures and as experienced by customers. This serves to extend above all the range – a benefit that our customers have wished emphatically in the past. Today, our engineers can travel from Garching to the Nürburgring on a single tank of fuel. Earlier, this was just a pipe dream.<br /> <img title="Name:  8.jpg<br />

How does that work?</strong><br />In Sport or Sport plus mode, a suitable VALVETRONIC controller and the waste gates keep the turbocharger in the higher speed range. Normally, the waste gate used to regulate the charging pressure opens so that the exhaust gas flows out with the minimum possible loss. Pressure is built up again only when I hit the accelerator. For an improved response, I leave the waste gate closed until I need it for regulating. The exhaust gas then always passes over the turbine, which then runs at a considerably higher speed. When even more power is demanded, it is immediately available. However, I have a gradually rising counterpressure that causes a slight rise in consumption. This function can therefore be switched on and off. By the way, in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé the same function is activated at the M Button.<br /> <img title="Name:  9.jpg<br />

At the back in the centre the two catalytic converters, and next to them the water cooled engine controllers.</em><br /><strong>We sometimes hear that turbo engines are preferred because they are easier to build. Is that true?</strong><br />No, at least not our engines, not by a long chalk. High speed aspirated engines are subjected to high mechanical forces, and I need charge changing that works not only at the highest speeds, but also with adequate efficiency in normal driving mode.<br />Furthermore, the turbo engine must fulfil high thermal requirements. The V8 engine of the BMW M5 can run with exhaust temperatures up to 1050 °C. The higher the possible temperatures, the better: I don’t need to enrich the mixture – and raise fuel consumption – for cooling the engine, and high temperatures are good for the response. These temperatures, though, must be mastered and controlled. The engine block of about 200 kg measures at least 110–115 °C, and the temperatures of the exhaust manifolds and turbochargers can be as high as 1000 °C. <br /> <img title="Name:  10.jpg<br />

On top, the engine can provide a great deal of power at low speeds too (as I said before: about twice as much as the old V10), so considerably more heat can accumulate there as well. For most cars, this is scarcely of any significance because the full power output is brought to bear only very rarely, if ever. Yet the BMW M5 is a sports car, and this power is demanded, especially on the race track.<br /> <img title="Name:  11.jpg<br />

Our so called heat manager can detect all critical situations during normal operations. Should any medium, oil, water, or an engine component become too hot under specific environmental or load profiles, countermeasures are taken automatically. These can even involve throttling the power output for the protection of the engine. These temperatures, though, are only brief and so are not detrimental to the oil. When, on the other hand, the oil is subjected to high temperatures for long and frequent periods, the displayed service intervals automatically take this into account. The high performance M engines are therefore designed for drivers who don’t want to drive with one eye constantly on the oil temperature gauge.<br />By the way, the engine no longer needs the familiar 10W-60 oil with its high viscosity. Instead, we can use the latest low viscosity oils for considerably less friction.<br /> <img title="Name:  16.jpg<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Shortly after making his first appearance as a BMW works driver at the BMW Sports Trophy, Martin Tomczyk (DE) is now set to climb behind the wheel of the BMW M3 DTM for the first time.</p>

<p>From 6th to 8th December, the reigning DTM champion will be testing for BMW at the “Monteblanco Circuit” near Seville. The three manufacturers involved in the DTM will meet for the last time this year for another joint test at the circuit in southern Spain.</p>

<p>“I am already really looking forward to getting in the car for the first time,” said Tomczyk. “It is very exciting to get to know new people in the team and to drive a new car. For me, Spain will be all about finding my feet in the team and familiarising myself with the BMW M3 DTM. At the same time, I also want to start doing my bit towards the development work by offering my feedback. We will all be doing our utmost to ensure that BMW’s return to the DTM is a success.”</p>
<p>Tomczyk will be joined at the tests by Andy Priaulx (GB) and Bruno Spengler (CA). They will be alternating in the three cars belonging to BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG. The fourth works driver confirmed for the DTM project, Augusto Farfus (BR), was in action a fortnight ago at the Monteblanco test, and so sits this test out.</p>
<p>This gives another two DTM newcomers the opportunity to take to the track in the BMW M3 DTM: Romain Grosjean (FR) and Marco Wittmann (DE). Reigning GP2-Champion Grosjean, a Formula One test driver and former Grand Prix driver, is familiar with the DTM environment from his time in the Formula 3 Euro series, in which he won the title in 2007. Wittmann learned his trade in Formula BMW and has spent the last few years racing in the Formula 3 Euro series. Just two weeks ago he produced an impressive performance at the renowned Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix (CN), where he started from pole and went on to claim a fine podium finish.</p>
<p>”We are looking forward to Martin’s first laps in our DTM car,” explained BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. “We now have a very strong squad with four top drivers. This allows us to work productively at the tests and ensure we push ahead with our project. This last test before the end of the year is once again very important to us. Our teams are already set up to function well. Our aim now is to validate the standard parts and complete as much work on the stability of our BMW M3 DTM as possible, so we can concentrate on getting the most out of the car and preparing for the start of the season in the new year.”</p>
<p>Marquardt added: “Romain Grosjean and Marco Wittmann will also get the chance to test for us. Both have shown what they are capable of on numerous occasions in their racing series. We are looking forward to seeing how they handle the BMW M3 DTM.”</p>

Imagine the thrill of experiencing each of BMW M’s creations, the moment each one was released to the eager public. What true car enthusiast would not jump at such an opportunity? One of IND’s most valued local clients is precisely such an enthusiast, and jumped at precisely such an opportunity.</p>
<p>Our client is a BMW M fanatic, and has been blessed with the chance to experience BMW’s M tradition first hand, car by car. When the 1M was announced, our client knew that it may be the best M in years, and that he absolutely had to experience the newest addition to the M family.</p>

<p>As many of you know, acquiring a 1M is no small feat, and despite our client’s love for the M brand, he was not able to have an allocation from his home dealer. Undeterred, our client continued his pursuit by contacting BMW NA directly and found his solution. After seeing a faxed list of M and BMW cars our client had previously owned and seeing our client’s passion for M cars, a rep at BMW NA realized that he would have to build him a 1M at any cost.</p>
<p>Together with BMW’s North American office, IND, and our client’s favorite dealership- Patrick BMW, our client embarked on a journey to create his perfect vision of a 1M. Patrick BMW has supported IND since the company’s youngest days, and was a perfect ally for building this car. Patrick helped coordinate the car’s “pre-delivery” delivery to IND’s facility with perfect smoothness, and their access to the BMW parts bin was invaluable in obtaining items like the performance steering wheel and spoiler on short notice.</p>

<p>Two months after our client’s conversation with BMW NA, IND’s staff was looking at a perfect, brand new Valencia Orange 1M, still fresh from transport, every possible surface still covered in protective plastic lining.</p>
<p>The 1M was sent directly to IND’s facility, before being delivered to our client, so we had to work fast. Knowing that one of the most sought-after M cars ever made is in town and waiting for pickup but having to wait for modifications to get installed is sure to provoke impatience in any man, and we did our best to make the wait for delivery a short one.</p>
<p>Our mission was therefore clear- build the best performing, most eye-catching 1M possible, and do the job in exactly 48 hours.</p>

<p>We began tearing into the brand new 1M as soon as it arrived at our facility. Many of the parts to be installed on the car were either prototype parts, or specifically selected because the manufacturer was early to market, and we knew some adjustments would be necessary.</p>
<p>The original hood was removed in favor of Seibon’s power dome equipped carbon fiber piece. Although the paint scheme is not of IND’s own design, our client is very creative and insisted on incorporating his ideas into the project. The Seibon hood and paint scheme are a direct result of our client’s own creative direction. IND added gloss black front and side grilles to eliminate the car’s only chrome trim. RevoZport provided their two-piece adjustable front lip and two-piece rear diffuser, giving the car an aggressive appearance.</p>

<p>Our client has been a loyal fan of Rogue Engineering short shifters, installing one in every M Rogue had a shifter for, so we knew we had to provide a short shifter for this car as well. We contacted Ben at Rogue Engineering and learned that he was developing a shifter but would not have a ready to sell solution ready for another two months. Despite this, Ben was able to build a one-off pre-production short shifter for our 1M project just days after we requested the piece.</p>
<p>We chose KW ‘s height adjustable sleeve kit to give this 1M flexibility in its height setting for year-round use. The sleeve kit includes springs that are well matched to the 1M’s original dampers but still allow for a controlled ride and reduced body roll along with sharper turn-in.</p>
<p>A car like this 1M must have a sound menacing enough to match its appearance. IND turned to Eisenmann for a tone that would be recognized even among a field of modified 1Ms. We coupled Eisenmann’s downpipe-back exhaust system with Akrapovic downpipes for a dramatic power increase over the 1M’s already formidable M-tuned engine. ESS Tuning provided software to optimize the power further, making this 1M an outright rocket.</p>

<p>No matter how many major modifications are installed on an IND Portfolio project, it is always the smaller details that truly finish the car. IND provided some of these one-off pieces by adding color-coded Valencia Orange steering wheel trim, a special Valencia Orange striped BMW Performance steering wheel, a BMW Performance rear spoiler with an M3 CRT style paint scheme, and an M badge finished in gloss black with hand-painted Valencia borders. We finished the car by applying a custom paint scheme to the car’s already beautiful engine cover.</p>
<p>All of IND’s staff is patiently waiting for the moment when our client finally takes delivery of his brand new 1M, this Saturday. Although our client never enjoyed the car in its stock form, we are confident that he will love our interpretation of BMW’s newest work of automotive art.”</p>
