Celebrating 25 years of M5, BMW reveals today at Nurburgring a one-off BMW M5 CSL.

October 28, 2009

Celebrating 25 years of M5, BMW reveals today at Nurburgring a one-off BMW M5 CSL.
BMW’s Motorsport surprises us with a special lightweight version of the current E60 M5. The car is being described by M division’s head of development, Albert Biermann, as “the M5 CSL we never built”.
The almighty 5.0 liter V10 engine has been modified taking its capacity up to 5.5 liters. To accomplish this task, the highly strung, 90-degree unit has been enlarged with a longer stroke.
Official horsepower and torque numbers have yet to be disclosed, but Herr Biermann hints at around 580 horsepower and near 400 lb-ft of torque, a significant increase over the standard M5.
A carbon finer manifold increases capacity of the air box and an additional oil cooler. The front bumper gets an additional air duct in the place where the license plate is usually situated.
Channeling the added reserves back to the rear wheels is a beefed up version of the M3’s seven-speed double clutch gearbox. The Getrag engineered unit, operated via steering wheel mounted paddles or push/pull gear lever, supplants the standard M5’s sequential seven speed manual unit, offering smoother and more rapid gear shifts.
Since CSL is all about decreasing the overall weight, the BMW M5 CSL receives a carbon fiber roof, reducing the weight by 50 kg.
The interior has been stripped down, rear seats have been removed while two carbon fiber seats replace the front ones.
No official performance numbers have been released yet, but Herr Biermann hints the M5 CSL did the Nurburgring track in under 8 minutes, 20 seconds faster than the regular M5.
Unfortunately for the BMW fans, the M5 CSL remains an exercise and there are no plans for a production car. ‘

BavarianMotorsportClub.org: Wired Magazine features the BMW Night Vision

Wired Magazine features the BMW Night Vision
10.22.2009
When the new BMW 7 Series launched, an improved version of the Night Vision System shipped together with the car. Featuring an upgraded camera, the Night Vision System features a better resolution and improved object-recognition. The system will warn the driver if he is in danger of a collision with any detected object or human.
Compared to the traditional navigation system, the Night Vision System is also able to detect road speeds without relying on pre-saved data on the hard drive. Therefore, if the limit is reduced because of road-building-measures, the Night Vision system will actually be able to detect it.
The system will be able to detect humans and to display a flashing warning triangle in the dashboard if any humans should appear in front of the car. The system is built to function not only in good weather conditions, but also at night, even in rain or foggy conditions. The car won’t slow down automatically though, but it will emit a warning signal in the dashboard if he is driving to fast.
bmw_night_vision_system_01
We’ve tested the Night Vision Camera in our 750i loaner and we were impressed by its accuracy and usefulness at night.
Earlier this week, Wired Magazine published an analysis of the BMW Night Vision System and we’re going to post some of their findings:

The Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection system significantly advances the first-gen system found in the last 7-series by adding people-spotting technology that distinguishes between animals and humans. The system was developed by the Swedish firm Autoliv Electronics. It is the latest evolution of technology that Lexus and Mercedes-Benz also have offered since Cadillac brought it to the automotive sector in the 2000 Deville sedan.
Since then, thermal imaging has made way for far- and near-infrared cameras that detect even the smallest changes in temperature. BMW’s passive system uses far-infrared technology to scan for heat, whereas Mercedes’ near-infrared system illuminates the road with projected infrared light. The BMW system stands apart for its extreme depth, clarity in rain and ability to minimize extraneous information. Despite the added safety such systems offer, Cadillac and Lexus dropped them because few people bought them. But BMW, like Mercedes, still sees a market for it.
The system does a great job of helping you see in the dark, but it is not without flaws.
BMW isn’t suggesting drivers switch off their headlights. The $2,600 option compliments the 7-Series’ adaptive headlights, which follow your steering inputs to help you see around that turn. The system provides a crisp, clear picture of 1,000 feet of pavement ahead of you, a distance Autoliv says is twice the range of the headlights. That can mean the difference between avoiding that deer and totaling your $110,000 Bimmer.

BMW Sauber Takes 2nd at the Brazilian Grand Prix

October 19, 2009

BMW Sauber Takes 2nd at the Brazilian Grand Prix

Official Release: In an electric and action packed Brazilian Grand Prix the BMW Sauber F1 Team earned its second trophy this season. Robert Kubica managed to come second in the race after starting from only eighth. Nick Heidfeld improved in his first stint from 18th to tenth, but then retired after his first pit stop because the fuel rig didn’t work and let him run dry. The eight points scored in the penultimate race of the season has put the BMW Sauber F1 Team ahead of Renault in the Constructors’ World Championship to seventh. The BMW Sauber F1 Team wants to congratulate Jenson Button and Brawn GP for the Championship titles.

Robert Kubica: 2nd

“The basis for today’s result was laid yesterday when we decided to take a gamble and drive the wet qualifying with a low-downforce set-up. This went well in Q1, but was difficult in Q3. Although some people were disappointed with eighth place yesterday, I was quite pleased. Today we had a good and consistent pace. I was surprised at the beginning that it was quite easy to follow Rubens Barrichello and Mark Webber. But I had to reduce the engine revs after about 15 laps because the water temperature was too high, and I had to avoid the tow of the guys in front of me. After my first pit stop I was unlucky because I got stuck behind four cars. At that stage Mark was able to increase the gap. This is a great result in a difficult season, and I really hope that I will see this team on the grid next year.”

Nick Heidfeld: DNF (retired after 21 laps with no fuel)

“My start wasn’t perfect but I saw there were very tight fights and decided it was better to stay clear of trouble. Then straight away there were crashes in turn two and at the exit of turn five. I was able to overtake a couple of cars, and among them was Romain Grosjean who didn’t really play fair. I was worried I could lose my front wing then. After I had left him behind me I closed the gap to Sebastian Vettel but could not overtake him. Then I was due for my first pit stop. I wondered how quick the car was and soon I received the call to save fuel and to save more fuel, but it was too late. I ran dry in turn 8. At least it is good that the team has something to be happy about today.”

Mario Theissen (BMW Motorsport Director):

“First of all congratulations to Jenson Button and Brawn GP for having won both the Drivers’ and the Constructors’ World Championships. But today we also have some reason to be happy. Robert put in a strong performance without the slightest mistake. He was the only one on track who could keep up with the speed of the front runner over the entire race distance. His second place is a well deserved reward for the intensive work and the efforts of the last weeks. For the entire team it is important to achieve a top result at the end of that difficult season. I want to thank every single team member for that. Unfortunately the fuel rig didn’t work at Nick’s pit stop. Up to then he also drove a strong race. Our second podium finish this season saw us move up one position in the Constructors’ Championship. We want to keep that momentum for the final race in Abu Dhabi.”

Willy Rampf (Head of Engineering):

“That was a first class performance from Robert. He was consistently fast and without any mistakes. A great compliment and thank you to him and the entire team. We really earned this second place on the podium in our penultimate race. The risk to set the car up for dry race conditions during the wet qualifying session on Saturday paid off. Unfortunately Nick had a problem with the fuel rig, which did not work and was responsible for his early exit. Congratulations to Jenson Button and BrawnGP for winning two World Championships.”

BMW CEO Calls 2011 BMW 6 Series Best Looking BMW in Years!

October 18, 2009

BMW CEO Calls 2011 BMW 6 Series Best Looking BMW in Years! Renderings in M-Series.com Gallery
Category: Automotive
M-Series.com Photo GalleryBMW North American CEO, Jim O’Donnell, expressed his enthusiasm for BMW’s new generation 6 Series due to launch in 2011. Calling it “Best-looking BMW in years”, O’Donnell certainly gives hopes to everyone that the new redesigned 6er will be the high-end bimmer we have all been waiting for.
According to Mr. O’Donnell, the next next 6-series coupe and convertible will be radically different from the current cars’ styling. He agrees that the current 6-Series is very polarizing due to the “Bangle butt” it carries, but the redesigned 6er, will be a “super sleek” vehicle.
While O’Donnell doesn’t get into the specific design details, he mentions that the next-generation 6 Series will retain the overall dimensions of the current car, but it will more svelte looking. Unfortunately for the BMW fans, that’s all the information he was able to confirm at this moment.
But here are some of the information we learned in the past: the new 6er will receive the hardtop as seen in the BMW 3 Series Convertible and the soft top will NOT be an option. The bodystyle has been designed to accommodate the hardtop, so no raised up rear-end. The headlights will resemble in some ways the ones from the CS Concept, which is good news for the die hard CS fans. We also expect a larger than usual front-grille, a trend seen in the latest models.
As we mentioned many times before, the current engines are here to stay. The award winning twin-turbo 6-cylinder will power one of the entry levels 6er with its 326 horsepower, while the V8 twin-turbo 407 horsepower engine found in the new 7 Series will be found in the higher-end models.
Diesel fans have not been forgotten and the 6-cylinder diesel found currently in the 635d will “stick” around. The 354 horsepower Tri-Turbo 6-cylinder diesel is a great candidate for the new models as well.
BMW will also offer a 655 model, a hybrid version using the same technology as the upcoming BM X6 Hybrid and 7 Series Hybrid.
The 2011 BMW 6 Series will use the latest 8-speed transmission as well as the 7-speed DCT one. To make the new 6er appeal eve more to car enthusiasts, a new damping system will offer four different sport settings from Comfort right through to Performance , including an option for efficient performance.
BMW Efficient Dynamics will play its role in the 2011 6 Series by utilizing the Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration technologies.
The next BMW 6 Series will launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011.

M-Series.com Race News! Milner and Müller finish sixth in GT2
The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing M3s posted competitive times in ALMS GT2 qualifying, starting sixth and eighth on the grid, as less than a second separated the top ten cars. The Corvette of Jan Magnussen and Johnny O’Connell took the pole.
Click image for larger version Name: m3slagunalr.jpg Views: 3 Size: 526.4 KB ID: 1921 BMW finished third in ALMS GT2 manufacturers’ points in 2009.

The #90 car of Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand, starting sixth, had a mechanical problem just seven minutes into the race. Auberlen took the car to the garage; it did not return to the circuit.

Tommy Milner, who started the #92 car, was caught in a multi-car incident an hour into the race. He pitted and handed off to Dirk Müller, who came back a lap down to the class leader. He ran as high as fifth, but finished sixth after making a stop late in the race to repair a damaged left front wheel.

Patrick Long and Jörg Bergmeister won the GT2 class and the ALMS drivers’ championship in their Flying Lizard Porsche. Milner and Müller finished the season fourth in drivers’ points, BMW finished third in manufacturers’ points behind Porsche and Ferrari, and BMW-Rahal Letterman Racing finished third in team points.

The overall win went to the LMP1 Acura of Simon Pagenaud and Gil de Ferran. The drivers’ title went to David Brabham and Scott Sharp, who finished third overall and second in the LMP1 class in their Patron-Highcroft Acura. Patron-Highcroft won the team championship.

weeks away from the unveiling of the first official photos of 2011 BMW 5 Series.

October 18, 2009

If our sources are correct, we’re weeks away from the unveiling of the first official photos of 2011 BMW 5 Series. In the mean time, 5 Series test mules continue testing across Europe.
The photos shown below were spotted in Germany and Austria, including some shots from the car doing the ‘Ring track. If most of the spy photos we’ve seen where giving us the 5er in a dark silver color, these latest ones show us the new 5 in the Milano Beige color.
The 2011 BMW 5 Series subject has been reported by us many times, but for those of you that are new to the blog, let’s do another quick recap.
IMG_0632
BMW will revise the term much used in past success “Die neue Klasse” to welcome its new F10 5er the 6th generation model of the highly successful and important mid class sedan.
The new 5er will of course replace the successful and avantgarde looking E60 series of the BMW 5er and will be an all new car from the ground up although with the advent of the BMW 5er Gran Turismo although a member of the same family on the exterior surface there are few areas shared with the 5er . Door Mirrors , side indicator lights and door handles are the relatively evident components identified between the 5er and the 5er Gran Turismo.
bmw_5_series_spy_shots_2009_007
Every body panel is unique to the 5er as BMW claim the 5er Gran Turismo is a stand alone premium concept. The new design idea was to built a car that looks expensive, but more modern and proportionate than a typical mid segment sedan.
The low roofline and short overhangs are typical of this approach and in general the car is evenly proportioned with a wider track to accommodate larger wheelarches which was a visual problem with the E60 when run on 16″ or 17″ wheels because it made the car look heavy which meant to have the car looking perfect the optional 18″ wheels had to be applied to show the proportions of the modern appearance of the E60.
The more dynamic styling expresses an intent to disguise the heavy look seen in a mid segment sedan, the wider track also helped integrating a wider twin kidney grille.
The new BMW 5 Series grows a few inches both in length and width, but one of BMW’s goals was to keep the car at the current weight levels. To achieve this, extensive aluminum in the exterior panels have been used.

Body shells and platforms can be made lighter and stronger using this new process. Additional areas of the car, such as water pumps, transmission cases and suspension mounts have also been made out of lighter materials, and the new car retains the typical BMW 50/50 weight distribution.
Efficient Dynamics will be highly featured in the next generation 5 Series with the usual features, now taken for granted. New efficiency features will also include specially designed aerodynamic wheels.
In light of future legislation, BMW have been working Active Hybrid model as well using the same “mild” hybrid technology as the 7er. The Active Hybrid 5 and the the Active Hybrid 5d, will use the same system as the Active Hybrid X6, but will replace the V8 for a 3.0 liter diesel engine.

Evo Magazine drives the BMW X6 M

October 18, 2009

M-Series.com: Evo Magazine drives the BMW X6 M
Category: Automotive
Evo Magazine drives the BMW X6 M
BMW X6 M reviews have began to appear weeks ago and we reported on several of them. So far the reviews have been fairly posit100s of ///M BMWs for sale, 1000s sold since 1999ive, with more journalists giving thumbs to this first all-wheel drive M, a vehicle that created controversy prior to its launch.
The UK based magazine, EVO, sat in the X6 M taking it for a ride and they begin with this question: Can a 547bhp M Division makeover turn the X6 into a more loveable car?
We’ll go ahead and take a look at their report….
“Let’s get the bad news over with first. This will leave plenty of space for the good news that must inevitably follow when you’re talking about a new BMW powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 with 547bhp and 502lb ft of torque and which accelerates to 62mph in 4.7sec and has a top speed of 171mph.
car_photo_317980_25
The bad news is that the above stats belong to the X6M, on paper the most wrong-headed idea BMW’s Motorsport division has had in its mostly glorious 37-year history. Indeed, it appears to be a flat contradiction of the thing that, at one time, it vowed it would never do: an SUV. (In fact it’s done two – there’s an X5M as well.) From this flows the other supposed M-badge no-nos: turbocharging, automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
Then there’s the timing. Could there be a less opportune moment, as the world attempts to extricate itself from the worst recession for 50 years, to launch a monstrously powerful 2.4-ton leviathan clearly aimed at sticking one on the Cayenne Turbo S and Mercedes ML63 AMG? M Division boss Kay Segler says they aren’t rivals (for the coupe-themed X6M at least) but on price and performance they clearly are.
